"The Manor" Returns, Yet Again - Leaving $25M Behind

One of the most expensive properties in the country was recently re-listed with a drastic price cut. The Manor, a mega-mansion in Holmby Hills that was originally built for Candy and Aaron Spelling, is on the market again for the price of $175 million.

Current owner, Petra Ecclestone, a British socialite, handbag designer, and heiress to Formula 1, first listed the expansive California mansion in 2016 with a price tag of $200 million but removed it from the market after no buyer was found. The opulent home was re-listed in early June with the lower price tag.

The lavish residence clocks in at more than 56,000 square feet, which is slightly larger than the White House, and sits upon five acres of prime real estate in one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Los Angeles. It was commissioned and built specifically for the Spelling couple in 1988, at the height of Spelling’s career. Aaron Spelling is responsible for producing numerous mega-hit television shows ranging from Dynasty to Beverly Hills, 90210. To complete construction, the couple was forced to demolish a smaller home on the property that was once owned by Bing Crosby.

With 123 rooms, the huge compound is a sight to be seen. The exterior is inspired by a French chateau and the interior is made up of 14 bedrooms, 27 bathrooms, a bowling alley, and a two-story closet. The home also once featured a room specifically for Mrs. Spelling’s dolls and a room designed for cutting flowers.

When Ecclestone purchased the estate, she revamped the interior to add a racier vibe to the home with the help of designer Gavin Brodin. In addition to putting in a dance club in the basement, her updates also included a spa with a massage parlor, an extravagant fish tank housing a variety of exotic fish, and VIP lounge with velvet walls and crystal accents.

The heiress purchased the home in 2011 for $85 million and was rumored to have turned down an offer of $150 million dollars a couple of years ago. If the home sells for anywhere close to that number, it will shatter records for the highest-priced home sale in Los Angeles. The megamansion has some competition, though. A Bel Aire spec house is currently on the market for $188 million (down from the original price of $250 million), and billionaire Steven Udvar recently put his Beverly Park estate on the market with a price tag of $165 million in April.

Any of those homes has the potential to be the most expensive home purchased in the United States. That record was set by a Hamptons estate, which sold for $150 million in 2014.
