From Beautiful Dance Performances to Innovative Plays, Here are Three Can’t-miss Shows Happening at The Wallis This Spring

Located in Beverly Hills, The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts (often simply called “The Wallis”) is a community arts center named after philanthropist Wallis Annenberg. Each year, the venue puts on a revolving roster of theatre, dance, and musical performances (some are free, while others require a ticket for admission). Read on to find out more about some of the most-anticipated new shows of the spring season:

Lula Washington Dance Theatre

Founded by Lula and Erwin Washington in 1980, the Lula Washington Dance Theatre provides a creative outlet for minority dancers in the inner city. On January 31st, the Lula Washington Dance Theatre will perform at the Wallis. The show will use dance to explore cultural and humanitarian issues that are particularly related to African-American history, culture, and life.

Frankenstein

This February, Mary Shelley’s classic novel will come to life at the Wallis thanks to Four Larks, an L.A.-based company that produces original performance work that sit at the intersection of theatre, music, dance, and visual art. Director/composer Mat Sweeney, creative producer Sebastian Peters-Lazaro, and lyricist Jesse Rasmussen will use physical theatre, experiential design, and live music to bring this timeless tale to life in a modern take that highlights the dangers of unregulated technology. The 12-cast performance will ask probing questions about the importance of moral responsibility for each generation. The show will take place at the Wallis from February 12th to March 1st.

Romantics Anonymous

Adapted by Emma Rice from the French-Belgium film Les Emotifs Anonymes, this poppy musical is coming to the Wallis from March 17th to 29th. Romantics Anonymous tells the story of Angelique, who makes chocolate, colored by the emotions that permeate her life, and Jean-René, whose chocolate factory is on its last legs. The performance tells a heartwarming tale of the joy and sorrow it takes to sustain love in the modern era.

From grand musical performances to standout dance numbers, the Wallis will host a slew of world-class productions this spring.
